Cameras not only capture a photo; they capture the history. But it itself has a very interesting backstory. First of all, the camera wasn’t actually invented for photography. In the early days of the camera, it was used to study optics. Also, it wasn’t invented by a single person either. In the course of time, many people contributed to the invention of it.

French inventor Joseph Nicéphore Niépce is mostly credited for the “it” we know today. He succeeded in taking the very first photograph that survived in 1826 and, as a result, is considered the first photographer in history.

Johann Zahn, a German author, designed a handheld reflex camera in 1685. His work helped the invention process hugely. Although it took a long time for his idea to be implemented.

It works on a principle called “camera obscura.”

Arab inventor Ibn Al-Haytham is recognized as the creator of the camera obscura. Long before him, the Chinese philosopher Mozi and the Greek philosopher Aristotle also discussed the concept, though only in an indirect and less detailed manner. In 1490 Leonardo da Vinci, the Italian polymath, recorded a detailed description of the camera obscura.

In 1829 Louis Daguerre invented the Daguerreotype camera, which uses a copper plate to capture the light from the image. It took almost 15 minutes of exposure to fully capture the image. In 1839 the French government buys & declares the daguerreotype free to the world.

In 1840 Alexander Wolcott invented the Daguerreotype Mirror camera that made photographs not fade quickly. This used Daguerreotype plate was placed in front of a focusing system using a concave mirror to project an image. They got the first US patent for photography.

Thomas Sutton invented the panoramic camera in 1859. This was the first camera to use a wide-angle lens to capture a view wider than our eyes.

The stereo camera was invented by George Hare in 1864. This type had multiple lenses with separate image sensors or film frames for each lens. Those things allow this to capture a three-dimensional image.

In 1888 Kodak roll film was invented by George Eastman, the founder of Eastman Kodak. This was made for the amateurs who didn’t want to work with technical processes. In 1900, the Kodak Brownie camera was marketed to the masses massively. It was a simple cardboard box camera that used 117 roll film to capture 2¼ × 2¼-inch square photographs.

In 1900 Oscar Barnack invented the Leica camera. The Ricoh camera was lightweight & well known as a travel camera.

The revolutionary Leica One camera was also invented by Oscar Barnack, which went into production in 1925. It was the first 35mm camera. Later this became a standard for all film cameras. It allowed the photographers to go mobile & capture the moment. Some of the most iconic moments in history were later captured by Leica.

The well-known Polaroid was invented in 1948 by Edwin H. Land. The Polaroid could take a picture and print it instantly in about one minute.

In 1960 EG&G invented an underwater camera for the U.S. Navy, which could take photos up to 20 ft underwater.

The first single-lens reflex, or well-known SLR, camera arrives in 1949. The first digital scan was created in 1957. Although digital cameras arrived a few years later, in 1975, invented by Steve Sasson.

The world’s first autofocus camera was the Konica C35 AF, introduced in 1978, revolutionizing photography with automatic focusing technology. It was a milestone in history.

Sony released their Mavica camera in 1981. The Sony Mavica was the world’s first still video camera.

The digital camera became very popular in the 1990s. The DSLR and point-and-shoot cameras created the hype.

Photography became more accessible for everyone.

Kodak launched the KODAK DCS Camera in 1991, which was a professional digital camera system. It was very useful for photo journalists. 

The first for consumers that worked with a home computer was the Apple QuickTake 100, which came to the market in 1994.

The Minolta RD-175 was the first handheld portable digital SLR introduced in 1995, which had a 1.75M pixel resolution.

The first mirrorless camera was introduced in 2004. It was an Epson RD1. Mirrorless cameras are popular among travelers.

Action cameras created a new craze among the new generation of travelers/photographers. They are waterproof & capture high-resolution videos. The GoPro HD Hero was the first of this kind.

Another kind of it is Lytro, which was introduced in 2012. This allows the resulting image to be refocused after it’s been taken.

The first mobile phone with a built-in camera was introduced in 2000, marking the beginning of mobile photography.

Now, 2 decades later, smartphones have extremely powerful multiple cameras, which changed the world of photography.
