Different Types of Sari in Bangladeshi Fashion

The sari is the most popular dress for women in Bangladesh, for both casual and formal occasions. A sari is a garment worn by women, consisting of a long piece of cotton or silk wrapped around the body with one end draped over the head or over one shoulder.

The Bangladeshi sari comes in different colors, fabrics, designs, and even different cultural backgrounds. It consists of an unstiched drape varying from 4.5 to 9 meters (15 to 30 feet) in length and 600 to 1200 millimeters (24 to 47 inches) in breadth. A sari is commonly worn with a blouse and petticoat. In Bangladesh, the sari is considered a cultural icon.

There are multiple types of Bangladeshi saris. The most common Bangladeshi saris are given below:

Jamdani:

The most local Bangladeshi sari is the Jamdani sari. The Jamdani sari is made of karpas cotton. Jamdani is also known as the successor of muslin clothing, which probably was the most famous fabric in the world at its time. In ancient times, Europeans, Iranians, Mughals, Armenians, Pathans, and many other traders were related in the Jamdani business. Currently the largest pool of Jamdan weavers lives in Narayanganj. Also, Mirpur has a place called Jamdani Palli, where handloom workshops exist.

Dhakai Benarasi:

Benarasi is the first choice of any bride to be in Bangladesh. According to local myth, there was a time when the Benarasi sari was made of golden threads. The largest hub of Dhakai Benarasi saris is in Mirpur. The place is called Benarasi Palli, and probably this is one of the largest sari markets in the world.

Silk Sari:

Rajshahi is the only place in Bangladesh where good-quality silk shari is produced. The main element of the silk fiber is called pupae. The work on the fabric is one with stones, karchupi, embroidery, etc. The Rajshahi silk is very thin and soft. The sari is mainly worn on occasions where a gorgeous look is mandatory.

Tangail Handloom Sari:

Tangail is home to the largest concentration of weavers in Bangladesh, making it one of the country’s most important weaving centers. Tangail handloom saris have many different subcategories, like cotton, half-silk, soft silk, cotton Jamdani, twisted cotton, and Baluchuri, which are the different versions of Tangail handloom saris.

Katan Sari:

Katan saris are easily customized and quite comfortable to wear as well. Katan fabric alone comes in more than 20 different varieties, each with its own unique texture, design, and weaving style. Opera Katan, South Katan, Silk Katan, Mirpur Katan, Indian Katan, Benarasi Katan, and Net Katan are the famous types of Katan sari.

Loom Sari from Pabna:

Like Tangail, Pabna is also home to a thriving community of skilled weavers who continue the region’s rich textile tradition. They produce more wonderfully designed saris, which are called loom saris. They basically prepare silk and cotton sari. Though the size of the community in Pabna is a bit smaller, they also contribute to the clothing culture of Bangladesh quite significantly.
